Welcome to Women And Music!

We aim to promote and amplify new research on women’s participation in art music throughout history and across cultures. Our mission is informed by our community–the Music Department of the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University–which is home to active programs in both applied music and music as a humanistic area of inquiry. Our site brings specialized research to a broader public, including students, teachers, performers, ensemble directors, and listeners.

We are supported by the Aresty Research Center at Rutgers. Learn more here!

The WAM research team was honored with the award for Best Poster in STEM/Humanities/Social Sciences at Rutgers University’s 15th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium in spring 2019.

The recipients, from left to right, were Emily McGovern, Nathan Bishop, Glynnis Gourhan, Nick Wagner, and Bridget Knodel. This selfie was taken by their proud advisor, Rebecca Cypess, who brought donuts to celebrate the happy occasion.
